Methuen, MA; Walter Donald Baylor, Jr., 75, of Grace Morgan House, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at Holy Family Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Walter was known as "Donald" (his middle name) growing up as his father was Walter Sr. When he went off to college and moved to New England, he started to use his first name. His sister, Joslyn, who lives in Virginia, still calls him "Donald".

Walter was born April 2, 1947, in Glenridge, New Jersey. Walter graduated from Montclair High School in 1965 where he excelled on the track team as a high jumper. He lost his mother at the age of sixteen and was very close to his sister, Joslyn; three years his junior who took over the cooking and cleaning. Her fondest memory of "Donald" was him teaching her how to drive the family car that had a stick shift. He had her driving in the neighborhoods, double parking and stopping frequently. Then he decided to take her on a steep hill with a traffic light which of course turned red. She had to stop on the hill and when she looked at "Donald" he had the most devilish grin on his face. After stalling a few times, Joslyn managed to get up the hill and around the corner. Thanks to him she has become a great driver.

From there he went to Northeastern University; majoring in Business Administration and decided he wanted some hands-on work. He took the Air Force Qualifying Exam and entered the service. For four years, he worked on C5 aircrafts in Biloxi, Mississippi and later did similar work in Delaware. Walter returned from the Air Force, and he went back to school and studied engineering at Wentworth.

Walter went to work at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH); first in security and then in Biomedical Engineering. He helped develop their complex communication system and worked tirelessly on all the much-needed medical equipment. He worked the rest of his career in Biomedical Engineering. At MGH he met the love of his life, Joyce, and they were together for forty-six years. They were married in a small family ceremony in Rockport, Mass. They never had any children but "adopted" their nephew Rob, his wife, Eileen and their children, Amanda and Brena. He is Amanda's godfather. He is very devoted to his twenty-three nieces and nephews and several great nieces and great nephews.

Some of Walter's hobbies included fishing, boating and golfing. He absolutely loved working on sports cars and was in the Pit Crew for a friend in the Sports Car Club of America. Another passion was photography. His niece, Mary Jean, remembers when he took wedding photos at her daughter's wedding-he caught candid shots and did such a great job. Many thought he was a professional photographer.

A special memory from his nephew, Rob, was when he was Rob's best man at his wedding in Vermont. Walter forgot the rings and the ceremony was going to begin in 5 minutes-the hotel was ten minutes away. He drove 100 miles per hour and made it back safely with the rings and the ceremony only delayed a few minutes.

His niece Eileen remembers when he and Joyce came to vacation in Vermont with the family. Walter did his best to water ski. He got pulled in the water, swallowing much of the lake, and he couldn't quite get pulled up onto the water. He was applauded for his efforts. Many laughs and stories have been retold with that experience.

A special memory from his niece, Amanda, was when they went to McDonalds. The girls were allowed to play with their happy meal toys AND go on the playground before they had to eat-something never allowed with their parents.

His niece, Brena, remembers being driven all around Rockport in his Isuzu car with the stick shift-she thought he was so cool!

Jackie, another nephew, remembers that Walter would always go out of his way to help others and always put himself last. He was always patient when helping to set up electronics over the phone, (well before FaceTime) and never gave up until the problem was solved.

His niece, Annie remembers that Walter has a myriad of music albums and knowledge of different types of music. He always had a knack for music trivia and background information on singers and songwriters.

Walter can be described as easy going, loving, caring and is there whenever you need him. We are all proud that he is an Air Force Veteran. We are all especially proud of the dedication and loyalty to his wife during her long terminal illness; even as he began to struggle with his own medical issues. He has always been hardworking and supportive to all of us.

What we all have learned from Walter "Donald"- is that family is number one; along with helping others whenever you can. We all love you Walter!

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Joyce Buchanan, they spent forty-six wonderful years together. Walter is lovingly remembered by his sister, Jocelyn Baugh of Richmond, VA; close Nephew, Robert Parry and his wife, Eileen of Plaistow; close nieces, Miranda Baugh, and Katherine Baugh, and Brena Parry Espinosa and her husband, Eric of Haverhill; great niece, Constance; God daughter, Amanda Carrozza and husband, Stephen of Plaistow; great-great nephews, Nicholas, and Jonathan Carrozza. He is also survived by twenty-three nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, August 13, at 11:00am with military honors, at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Plaistow, NH.
