Obituary

Plaistow, NH: Virginia P. (Hayes) LeBlanc passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on November 25, 2020 at the Warde Nursing Center in Windham, NH where she had been a resident since 2012.  Virginia was born in Amesbury, MA on July 1, 1919 to Florence Dore and Mark Hayes.  She married the love of her life Wilfred LeBlanc in August 1941. They had a daughter, Corrine, who was born in 1944, with spina bifida and passed away at the age of three in 1947.  Their daughter, Kathleen, was born in 1951 and in 1953 their son, Ronald, was born.  In the early days of their marriage, Wilfred and Virginia lived in Fitchburg, MA.  They moved to Plaistow, NH in 1954.  That same year, Virginia's mother and stepfather, Harold Sawyer, built a restaurant on Route 125 in Plaistow, Sawyer's Restaurant. Virginia worked there and in 1961 she and Wilfred bought the restaurant from her parents.  It became a well-known establishment and for many years was the oldest business in Plaistow.  They ran the restaurant until 1974 when Ronald and his wife Beverly took it over.  Virginia remained a prominent figure at the restaurant and later at Sawyer's Banquet Hall.  In November 1982, two days before Thanksgiving, Virginia lost her beloved husband suddenly.

She enjoyed playing bingo and late into her 90's attended all the bingo games at the Warde Health Center, needing little help finding the numbers. She also had a passion for golf and at the age of 85 could still hit a ball 100 yards straight down the fairway.  Virginia had a special talent for creating beautiful artwork using the embroidery technique of Japanese Bunka. Another passion was for music and singing.  When a song she recognized was playing, she would burst into song, remembering every word.

Virginia was very involved with her grandchildren.  She attended all her granddaughter's swim meets, cheering from the stands.  She was very proud of her granddaughter's accomplishments in horsemanship and her many show wins.  She enjoyed spending time on the golf course with her grandson.  Above all, her love for her family was abundant and infinite.  When her family entered the room, her face would light up, especially when she saw the children.  Her family was everything to her.  Her love extended beyond her family to everyone who knew her.

Virginia was preceded in death by her daughter, Corrine and her husband, Wilfred.  She is survived by her daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Steven Marullo, her son Ronald and her daughter-in-law Beverly LeBlanc, her grandchildren Jessica Lague, Melissa Gladhill, Christopher LeBlanc, Crystal Little, Dominic Marullo and Anthony Marullo, her great-grandchildren Amina, Hadley, Owen, Carter, Silas, Cecilia and Edward.

Due to COVID the family decided to have no calling hours. A private family graveside service will be held in Saint Joseph Cemetery in Amesbury under the direction of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH.  A memorial service will be planned for late Spring to early Summer.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that people make donations to:  Elder Services, Town of Atkinson, 19 Academy Avenue, Atkinson, NH 03811 or the Spina Bifida Association, 1600 Wilson Blvd., Ste. 800, Arlington, VA 22209.
