IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Suzanne J.
O'Hanlon
March 7, 1939 – May 9, 2023
Suzanne Jane O'Hanlon, 84, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2023 at the Aspen Hill Healthcare Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease.
Suzanne was born and raised in Utica, New York and was the oldest of five children. She attended high school at Utica Catholic Academy, where she excelled in academics and met her lifelong love and husband of 63 years, George O'Hanlon, in typing class. Sue and George were married in 1960 and had three children, Charlie, Tom and Mary. In the first of several moves in support of George's career they moved to Albany, New York, and subsequent moves would take them to Maryland, Connecticut, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Throughout these moves, Sue was the glue that held things together, providing the family with a supportive, stable and loving home. Her children fondly recall her painting and wallpapering and doing projects in each new house to make it a home, and they know they got their practical skills from their mom!
After being a full-time mom while her kids were young, she rejoined the workforce when they were older, holding positions with the US Department of Commerce, US Department of Veterans Affairs, Connecticut General Life Insurance and others. In retirement, Sue and George lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and enjoyed traveling and cruises, taking trips to several countries in Europe and throughout the Caribbean. They also enjoyed having breakfast most mornings with their circle of friends at the neighborhood Panera!
Sue was a woman of strong faith and was part of the Catholic Church her entire life. She was active in her local churches, volunteering her time and skills in support of their mission to help the community. Sue always prioritized the needs of others above her own, making sure everyone had what they needed. She took great delight in seeing her family grow and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Sue was an accomplished gardener and the plants that she cultivated live on in the gardens of her family and friends. She was also an expert seamstress who could create an entire sofa slipcover from scratch, working through the night in her sewing room. She was a lover of animals and usually had a cat or two. Sue is remembered as a kind gentle soul, always friendly, even in her later years when struggling with Alzheimer's. She made this world a better place and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Sue is survived by her loving husband George O'Hanlon, sons Charlie O'Hanlon and his wife Liz, Tom O'Hanlon and his wife Jen, daughter Mary Dolan and her husband Jim, her sisters Janice Palmer and Joan Outwater, her brother James Hillebrand, her grandchildren Sean Dolan, Hilly O'Hanlon, Devin O'Hanlon, Katie O'Hanlon, Meghan Serbin and Grace O'Hanlon, and her great-grandchildren Maeve Dolan and Niall Serbin. She was preceded in death by her parents Francis and Lucille Hillebrand and her brother Greg Hillebrand.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday May 17 th at 11:00am at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 8 Atkinson Depot Road, Plaistow, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to St. Luke the Evangelist Parish.
