Obituary

Selma Wilson Singer, 87, a force to be reckoned with, passed peacefully at home in Kingston NH on Sunday, May 29. Born in Portsmouth, NH, she was an early and fierce fighter for women's rights and social justice. After receiving her Master's from UNH, she became a revered professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Northern Essex Community College. A most treasured memory was being at Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial. It embodied all she felt about the rights of individuals to live as they choose.

She leaves her husband of 65 years, Gerald Singer, her children, Marcia Hill and husband Jay, Howard Singer and partner Stacey Smith, Elizabeth Pitzer and husband Kevin, David Singer and wife Teresa, Tracy Singer and Alexandra Suchocki. She also leaves her dear brother Richard Wilson and wife Sezen, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and countless grateful students. Her greatest joy was listening to opera and cooking for her family and anyone else who happened to wander in.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 2 at 10 a.m. at Brookside Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Plaistow, NH. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Kingston, NH. In place of flowers, contributions may be made to Haven (formerly A Safe Place/SASS), 20 International Drive, Suite 300, Portsmouth, NH 03801 or Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St, Lawrence, MA 01843.
