Scott M.
Rutherford
October 16, 1939 – October 19, 2021
Scott M. Rutherford, 82, of Haverhill, MA, passed away on Tuesday October 19, 2021, at Penacook Place in Haverhill.
Born in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Milene (Muir) Rutherford.
Scott was affectionately called Scotty by those closest to her. While living in Wellesley Hills, MA with her family, Scotty fell in love with dogs and was bitten by the dog show bug by the age of 13. She had more of an interest in breeding and showing dogs than in anything else. Still a young woman, she began Rococo Kennels in 1952 in Norfolk, MA. She bred and sold Boxers and produced many champions over the years. She had clients all over the world and judged at many international shows. Her interest in Scottish Terriers began in the late 80's when she purchased a Scottie dog to give to her niece as a graduation gift…it was a gift her niece never received as Scott could not part with the dog. So began what was to become a life dedicated to breeding, showing and judging Scottish Terriers. The growing kennel eventually moved to Uxbridge, MA where Scott bred Scotties until 2014 and the age of 75. Scott was an active member of the American Boxer Club, the Scottish Terrier Club of America and the Scottish Terrier Club of New England. Scott loved nothing more than knowing she placed good tempered and beautiful dogs with loving families that enjoyed many years enriched by the wonderful and personable Scottie dog as part of their family.
After selling her home in Uxbridge she moved to Franklin where she lived happily for several years and most recently, she lived in Methuen Village in Methuen, MA where she was closer to her niece.
In 1973 Scott took in her three young nieces after the tragic and sudden death of their mother, Scott's sister, and raised them for several years until their father was able to provide for them. Scott had a strong love for her four nieces and one nephew and spent much of her time and energy providing for them and maintaining a strong bond with them throughout her life. She made sure they received an education and imparted her love of travel and adventure to them.
Scott loved to travel and has been on many educational trips to Egypt, Ecuador, Japan, China, Indonesia, Africa, the Philippines, Europe and Australia. She studied Egyptology at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and traveled with this group to Egypt several times. She once led her own tour group to Africa and had many adventures as a tourist cruising the Yangtze River, exploring the Galapagos and discovering the flora and fauna of the Australian outback.
Scott will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her brother, Thomas Rutherford of Tarpon Springs, FL, nieces, Barbara Monaghan of Mountain Brook, AL, Catherine Gajewski of Barrington, NH, Chelise Storace of Moody, AL, and Armista Frothinger of Bay Point, CA. She was predeceased by her sister Anne Findlen, brother Gordon Rutherford, sister-in-law Gabrielle Rutherford and nephew Gordon Rutherford.
A Celebration of Life will be held as a livestream Facebook event on October 31 at 4 pm. Search "Celebration of life for Scott Rutherford" on Facebook.
