IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Scott David
Mccullough, Sr.
September 2, 1958 – October 22, 2019
Newton, NH: Scott David McCullough Sr., 61, of Newton, NH, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at home with his loved ones at his bedside. Scott was diagnosed in 2014 with an extremely rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder known as Multiple System Atrophy.
Born in Waltham, MA, the son of the late Robert H. Sr. and Marguerite (MacKenzie) McCullough, he graduated from Waltham High School with the Class of 1976. After high school, he worked at Agway for a few years and then decided to follow in his father's footsteps and became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #4. He trained as a heavy equipment mechanic and held a hoisters license. He began his career at Seabrook Station at the beginning of its construction, working under the tutelage of his father, who was Master Mechanic of the maintenance shop. From there, Scott worked various union jobs in Massachusetts and Maine, including the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Ted Williams Tunnel phase of the Big Dig. Scott's career came full circle as his last position, before having to retire, was at Seabrook Station as the Master Mechanic in the maintenance shop. Scott had deep respect and appreciation for Local 4 and his union Brothers & Sisters, and his family is sincerely grateful for all they have done.
On March 1, 1980, Scott met his future bride, Mary-Jo Rutledge, on a blind date. They hit it off immediately and married 18 months later. They decided to settle in Newton, NH where they began their new life and raised their family.
Scott loved the outdoors and all that nature had to offer. He loved camping, fishing and hiking, and he made sure his family enjoyed countless camping trips to the White Mountains, and many summer vacations to Crescent Beach in Mattapoisett, MA. He enjoyed his travels, whether with family or friends, to Roatan, Bermuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Quebec City, Nova Scotia, Florida, and most of all, the 3 week family road trip out west, visiting the Badlands, Yellowstone, and Grand Tetons National Parks, and Jackson Hole Wyoming.
Scott also had a love of gardening and grew a great bounty of vegetables ever year, both in his home garden and at Battis Farm Community Garden, where he tended to his crops every day after work, for several years.
Being from the Boston area, Scott was naturally a Boston sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and Patriots. He was an avid reader enjoying the works of Tom Clancy and C.J. Box. He also enjoyed golfing, shooting pool, playing darts, and boating on Highland Lake with his best friends, Tom Karpowski and Trish Fillio.
Scott will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Mary-Jo (Rutledge), his son, Scott David McCullough II and his wife, Mary (Niedzwiecki) of Salem, NH, his daughter, Kady Elizabeth McCullough and her significant other, James Dobson of Newton, NH and his two beautiful grandsons, Camden Scott and Liam Thomas McCullough.
He is also survived by his brother, Charles and his wife, Rebecca (Lester) McCullough of Mattapoisett, MA, and his sisters and their husbands, Sally and Peter Lobo of Waltham, MA, Deborah and Robert Lockhart of Holliston, MA, and Rebecca and Donald Petersen of Princeton, MA., sister-in-law, Elaine McCullough of Lexington, MA, a few aunts and uncles and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Robert H. McCullough II.
The McCullough Family would like to thank the Rockingham Visiting Nurses and Hospice for their care and comfort, particularly Tyna D., Tracy C., Lisa P., Barbara, Joanie, David, and Cristine. The family is especially thankful to Kay Riley, whose loving care, comfort, and friendship made an extremely difficult situation, manageable. We would have been lost without her. Much love to you all.
