Obituary


Richard H. Rowell, 90, a native and lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Saturday, December 8, 2012, at his home, following a long illness.

Born in Haverhill, son of the late George and Elsie ( Ford) Rowell, he was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1940 and attended Boston University. He served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II and was a recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, The W.W.II Victory Medal, The American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

Richard worked for the Harry S. Vaughn Co. of Haverhill, beginning in high school and later purchased the company and operated it for twenty-five years until his retirement.

A member of the Lorraine Post of the VFW, Richard enjoyed reading, painting and collecting stamps and postcards. He also enjoyed dancing and singing with his wife Eleanor, to whom he was married for sixty-six years.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor (Eason) Rowell, two daughters, Eleanor Sudol of Haverhill and Barbara Pearson-Belanger and her wife Anne Belanger of South Lawrence, a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. and Bernice Rowell of Manchester, NH, nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert and Leroy and two sisters, Evelyn and Thelma.
