Obituary

Plaistow, NH: Richard L. "Dick" Haynes, 86, a resident of Plaistow and former member of the New Hampshire General Court, died Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the Lawrence General Hospital.

He was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, son of the late Moses "Arnold" and Lillian (Toshack) Haynes and moved to Plaistow at the age of five. He graduated from the former Haverhill Trade School with the Class of 1952 and attended Wentworth Institute in Boston. Mr. Haynes grew up on the family farm located on the Newton Road in Plaistow where he learned vegetable gardening and canning and how to raise and care for horses, cows and other livestock.

He began work as a young man, employed by Braley and Walker Machine Shop before establishing his own business in Plaistow, Richard's Steel and Iron Works, which he owned and operated form 1963 until 2000. He also served the Town of Plaistow as an Auxiliary Police Officer when he was a young man. From 1984 until 1996, Mr. Haynes served six terms as a representative to the House Chamber of the New Hampshire General Court and was a longtime member and Past Chairman of the Transportation Committee.

A former member of the First Baptist Church of Plaistow and the Old Town Squares, he was a member and Past President of the Haverhill Lions Club. He enjoyed traveling on behalf of the club and also enjoyed several cross country trips in his motor home. A dedicated husband and father, he included camping, skiing, fishing and weekly boating on Lake Winnipesaukee into the precious time that he spent with his family. In his later years he enjoyed woodworking.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of sixty-two years, Joan (Pottie) Haynes, his son and daughter-in-law, Brian R. and Lana Haynes of Plaistow, a daughter and son-in-law, Maureen A. and Brian Craven of Kingston, grandchildren; Hayden Haynes and Cody Haynes of Plaistow, and Hayleigh Boyle of Rhode island and Keynan Boyle of Pennsylvania, and a great-grand-daughter Genevieve Dalnas of Rhode Island,  sisters-in-law Lorraine Rago of Cape Coral, FL and Claire Madden of Amesbury, MA a brother-in-law Joseph Pottie and his wife Patricia of Newton, NH, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grand-daughter Ashleigh A. Boyle, a brother Forrest Haynes, two sisters, Evelyn Cronin and Thelma Hellen, and a sister-in-law Jean Amador.

Relatives and friends are invited to Mr. Haynes' Life Celebration to be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 4 th at 10 a.m. in the funeral home and followed by burial in Plaistow Cemetery.
