Obituary

Merrimac, MA: Peter J. Carter, 77, a resident of Merrimac for the last forty-seven years, died peacefully on October 21, 2019, at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill, following a long illness.

Born in Haverhill, son of the late William and Anna (Davichuk) Carter, he attended Haverhill Public Schools and was a e member of the Haverhill Trade School Class of 1960. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he honorably served as a Seaman (E-3) from 1963 until 1967 aboard the USS Dixie and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

Peter lived for several years in Arizona where he was a member of of the local Jaycees and was employed by Levitt's Furniture Co. When he returned to the Haverhill area, he worked at the Atherton Furniture Co and had also been employed by Samuel Roberts Clothing Co. in Haverhill. He later worked for twenty-seven years as a layout operator at Western Electric, A T & T Technologies and Lucent Technologies, until the plant's closing several years ago. He most recently worked at Wal-Mart.

Peter was a co-founder of Hap's Alley, and performed as Reggie the Clown for several years, performing at many local parades and entertained at children's parties, nursing homes and hospitals in the Merrimack Valley area. A member of the World Clown Association and a member and former board member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, he also served as an assistant representative for veterans and the Veteran's Administration at the Merrimack Valley Works of Western Electric. He was a longtime volunteer for the Massachusetts Special Olympics and also served as as a Cub Scout Master and Boy Scout Master in Merrimac as well as a Commissioner of Lone Tree Council BSA.

Peter was an avid reader and dauntless fan of the Boston Red Sox.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-seven years, Jane (Fravole) Carter, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Jessica Carter of Merrimac, two grandchildren, Michael E. Carter and Bella A. Carter, also of Merrimac, three brothers, Joseph Carter and Dennis Carter of Florida and John Carter of Bradford, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother William Carter.

A private family burial service with military honors will be held at a later date in the State of New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Veterans Northeast Outreach Center, 10 Reed St. Haverhill, MA.
