Haverhill: Paul E. Poirier, 84, of Haverhill died suddenly on Sunday September 13 2020, just a couple of hours before his weekly Zoom visit with his daughters Bonnie Fitzgerald and Joy Gorman following his daily brisk walk and breakfast out with friends. Paul will be remembered as a strong and steady, kind hearted, caring, supportive and generous father, grandfather, friend, and brother. He will be greatly missed.
He was born in Haverhill, on February 6, 1936, son of the late Alfred and Helen (Boisselle) Poirier. Paul grew up in a large family of ten brothers and sisters. He spent his entire life in Haverhill and loved the city. Paul attended Saint Joseph School and graduated Haverhill Trade School in 1954. He married Dolores Barton, and went to school nights at Lowell tech while he worked as a draftsman. His two girls were born shortly after and he continued his college education going to school nights graduating from Northeastern with a degree in mechanical engineering. Paul was employed at Western Electric/AT&T/ Lucent Technologies for the next forty-five years and took advantage of an early retirement.
Paul began a new chapter with roller -skating again, which was a high school passion. With a trainer and a dance partner, Paul began competing and advanced to the Nationals in 1998. Paul was outgoing and his nickname Pep suited him well. He enjoyed socializing and had a funny sense of humor. He was known for his magic tricks and sleight of hand -which put a smile of the faces of children and adults alike. Paul enjoyed the outdoors and walked every day in all seasons. He kept busy with projects at home, maintaining and restoring his historical Victorian at 52 Park Street for over forty years. He was adept and resourceful and could always be counted on to help solve a problem. Paul was fascinated with animals and usually had the nature channel on at home and typically preferred documentaries and historical shows. Paul made his family a priority and kept in touch regularly.
Predeceased in 1981 by his wife, Dolores (Barton) Poirier, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Bonnie Fitzgerald and her husband Tim of Goshen,NY, and Joy Gorman of Maui, Hawaii, grandchildren, Anna and April Fitzgerald of Goshen, Matthew Gorman of Maui, and Jonathan Gorman of Brooklyn, NY, two brothers, Roland L. Poirier of Haverhill and Friar Dominic, OFM (Donald Poirier) of New York City, sisters, Irene Iuele of Bradford, Marie Buckley of New Hampshire and Jeannette Phinney of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Alfred N. Poirier, Bros John Alexius, FMS (Henry Poirier), and Norman L. Poirier, and sisters Lorraine Marino, and Eva Talarico.
Relatives and friend are invited to a graveside service to be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 3:30 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery, Broadway, Haverhill, under the direction of Berube-Comeau Funeral Home of Haverhill. Visitation for family is private due to the national health emergency.
