Paul A.
Munier
August 31, 1928 – June 28, 2022
Haverhill: Paul A. Munier, 93, formerly of Blaisdell Street and Kennedy Circle in Haverhill, died Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Academy Manor in Andover.
Born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Theodore and Alice (Burgess) Munier and graduated Wakefield High School with the Class of 1946. He received both his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and his Master of Education Degree from Boston University, and majored in School Counseling.
Mr. Munier had a long and varied career in the field of education that spanned fifty-two years as a foreign language teacher, a tutor, a counselor and administrator in public school systems as well as private and parochial, boarding and military schools and college institutions. He worked in the Haverhill School System, primarily as a counselor and as an instructor at Endicott Junior College in Beverly. He was also a teacher and Founder and Director of the Drum Corps at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. In 1963, he founded the New England Military School in Byfield, MA. Known as "The Major" to his students, he served as its Headmaster from 1963 until 1978. He later volunteered as a teacher of English-As-A-Second-Language at the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Asian Center.
Another passion of Mr. Munier was his career as a Drum Major and Military Drummer. He studied drum majoring under Drum Major E. L. Barrd and drumming under Drum Instructor G. L. Stone. He helped to establish and lead several drum major and military drumming associations including The National Association of Rudimental Drummers, and was elected an Honorary Member of the Lancraft Fife and Drum Corps of Connecticut. He devoted many hours of his time to composing and publishing one hundred and seventeen military duets for snare and bass drums and gave free lessons in the four basic rudiments of snare drumming. He was also involved in the founding and support of the Military Pad Room, a meeting place for military snare and bass drummers from 1964 until 2010.
Mr. Munier also gifted several of his book collections on drumming to Boston University, as well as his collection of military snare drumsticks to Yale University and a military snare drum crafted by Eli Brown in 1829 to the United States Military Academy Museum at West Point.
Devoted to his adopted hometown of Haverhill, Mr. Munier was a member of the World War Two Memorial Committee and served as its clerk from 1989 until 1999, and spent countless hours with his friend, Nicholas Hideriotis, bringing that project to its eventual success.
Predeceased in 2015 by his loving and devoted wife, Annette F. (Fruin) Munier, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Kathleen Fruin, the wife of his late brother-in-law, John Fruin, a cousin, Ann Encarnacao of Andover, and Tien Phan Fran and Camn Phan Ryu and their families, to whom he happily served as their "Honorary American Grandfather" as well as many friends and colleagues.
There will be no calling hours and a private graveside service for family and friends will be held in Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Stoneham. Memorial donations should be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA.
