Obituary


Haverhill, MA: Olive A. (Maker) Cormier, 88, of Haverhill, died on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Merrimack Valley Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Warwick, Queensland, Australia, daughter of the late George and Myrine (Carolan) Maker, she graduated from St. Mary's Convent School. She met her husband James while he was stationed in Australia during World War Two and they were married in June of 1943.

She came to the United States as a "war bride" in November of 1953 and settled in Haverhill with her husband to raise her family.

Mrs. Cormier was employed in the retail food sales business and was the first woman manager of any supermarket chain. She worked as a manager and supervisor for Giant Value Market and Cerretani's Supermarket before being employed by Demoulas Market Basket Stores, mostly at the Westgate branch from where she retired after 25 years.

A member of All Saints Parish and an avid Red Sox fan, Mrs. Cormier enjoyed gardening and blueberry picking. She was a devoted wife, and a loving and proud mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, James J. Cormier, her sons, James J. Cormier Jr. and his wife Anne of Shaftsbury, VT, Dr. Robert T. Cormier and his wife Patricia of Duluth, MN, and Andre P. Cormier of Haverhill, her brothers, Lyall Maker and Kevin Maker, and her sister, Esmé Pearson all of Australia, six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Paul Cormier.

There are no calling hours. A graveside service will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 11 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA. Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Parish, 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01832. Arrangements are under the direction of Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill.
