Newton, NH: Mary J. (Morrison) Vater, 82, a former longtime resident of Groveland, died September 15, 2018 at High Point Hospice House in Haverhill.
Born in Stoneham, MA, daughter of the late John and Jennie (MacLean) Morrison, she was raised and educated in Malden, graduating from Malden High School with the Class of 1954.
A resident of Newton for fourteen years until a recent move to Haverhill, Mrs. Vater lived in Groveland from 1969 until 2004 and briefly in Georgetown. She was employed for several years as a sales representative for United Foam Plastics, and had previously worked at Chesterton, Co., and also as a teller at Georgetown Savings Bank, and as receptionist for Dr. Laura Potvin in Groveland.
A former longtime member of the Groveland Congregational Church and Past President and member of Faith Circle of the church, she was an avid reader and also enjoyed traveling, especially to the Bahamas, camping in Naples, Maine and across New England, and trips to Foxwoods. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, family was the most important aspect of her life and she enjoyed the special times that she spent with them, especially the holidays and family celebrations.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Eugene H. Vater, in November of 2017, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three sons, Scott Vater and his girlfriend Drina Kemp of Plaistow, Barry J. Vater and his wife Renae of Barrington, and Gregg W. Vater and his wife Karen of Atkinson, a daughter, Susan (Vater) Heck and her husband Raimund of Groveland, MA, a brother John Morrison of Florida, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Jeanette Vaccari.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mrs. Vater's Life Celebration to be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with burial to follow in Riverview Cemetery, Groveland, MA.
