Obituary

For nearly a century, Marie Elizabeth Miller was the one to see for her wisdom and humor.  Born on July 31, 1922, the second of eight children of Frederick L. and Frances C. Mosher of Haverhill, Massachusetts, Marie began developing her acclaimed skills as seamstress making dresses from the printed sacks in which flour was delivered to her family's home.  She developed into a gourmet cook from cooking the produce from the family's small farm and chicken coop.

With her fearless sense of purpose, Marie left home upon graduation from Haverhill High School (Class of 1940) to study at the Katharine Gibbs School in New York, graduating in 1941.  Marie worked throughout World War II at General Electric Company in Lynn.  The end of the war brought home her true love, Ernest Gideon Miller.  Marie and Ernie were married in 1946, and 50 years later celebrated their wedding anniversary in style and with much laughter with their pride and joy, their daughter Jeanne, and extended family and friends at Pond View in Kingston.

Marie and Ernie had enjoyed years of travel after her retirement from a career in office management and insurance claims before Ernie's death in 2003.  In her next chapter, Marie and Jeanne enjoyed attending theatre productions, undertaking shopping adventures, and dining at various venues throughout New England, before Marie and Jeanne merged their respective homes in Plaistow, New Hampshire and Atkinson, New Hampshire into one in 2009.  During their years in Atkinson, Marie and Jeanne enjoyed excursions of all sorts, including trips to the Cape and the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. Marie and Jeanne also shared Marie's love for and knowledge of gardening, birds and jigsaw puzzles, and Marie never gave up hope that one day Jeanne would also learn to sew, if she could only learn how to thread a needle.   Marie was an avid knitter and frequently joined the knitters' group at Atkinson Library. Marie was generous in both her time and talent, often knitting gloves, hats, and scarfs and donating them to various charities.

Marie was a member of St. Anne's Parish in Hampstead, New Hampshire for many years. Marie's strong Catholic faith and her lifelong devotion to the Blessed Virgin and her Son were evident to all who knew her.

Marie passed away on July 7, 2022, at home in Atkinson, with her devoted, loving daughter Jeanne at her side.  She is survived by her sister Ellen (Mosher) Rowinski of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Hampton, New Hampshire, brother Arthur Mosher of Derry, New Hampshire; her son James E. Miller of Longmeadow, Massachusetts; her caring and supportive daughter-in-law Thoma Maxwell Miller of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, her much-loved granddaughter Jessica Miller Cooper and her husband, David M. Cooper, and their two precious children, Kate and Jack, of Fairfield, Connecticut; and many nieces and nephews.  Marie also leaves many cherished friends, including especially Patty Lane of Atkinson, New Hampshire, whose affection long sustained Marie's good humor and contentment.  Marie is preceded by her parents and her siblings Frederick L. Mosher, Pauline (Mosher) Poitras, William F. Mosher, John J. Mosher, and Frances C. Mosher.

The person so long sought for guidance and solutions to problems and puzzles, Marie will be forever remembered and sorely missed by so many, especially her daughter and best friend Jeanne. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to Virginia and Philis, caregivers from Visiting Angels, who provided care and companionship to Marie over many months.
