Obituary

Haverhill – Madlyn Ann (Meteyer) Brown, 84, died July 7, 2018 at the High Pointe House in Haverhill following a lengthy illness. Born on September 2, 1933, and raised in Bradford, MA, Madlyn was a graduate of Haverhill High, class of 1951. She married Alexander Brown III in October 1952 and settled first in Haverhill, then Plaistow, where she and her husband raised six children. Madlyn worked in a variety of businesses, spending 15 years with Carparts Distribution Center in Plaistow, and as a community news columnist for several local papers, including the Haverhill Gazette and Lawrence Eagle Tribune.

Madlyn was very much involved in community activities with her husband through the Plaistow Lion's Club, was a charter member of the Plaistow Historical Society, and served on planning committees for Plaistow's 225th anniversary and bicentennial celebrations, as well as for the Plaistow municipal building, which houses the police and fire departments. She also served as den mother for several of her son's cub scout troops.

Most of all, Madlyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends, antiquing with her husband, and gardening at their home. She loved living in New England and often spoke of its natural wonders and the beauty of its four seasons. She was an avid sports fan and loved to watch and root for the local teams, as well as enthusiastically supporting her children and grandchildren in their varied activities. She was an ardent reader of fiction and biography, and lover of classical music.

Madlyn is proceeded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Alexander Brown III, parents Ernest and Ruth (Regan) Meteyer, and sister Virginia Bixby. She leaves her sons Ernest and his wife Susan of Sandown, Alexander IV and his wife Patricia of Plaistow, Joseph of Las Vegas, NV, and Christopher and his wife Julie of Newton, as well as daughters Karen Cottis and her husband Jeffrey of Hampstead, and Carol Chase and her husband Robert of Newton. In addition, Madlyn leaves nine grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
