Byfield: June Elizabeth Garvey, 66, a resident of Byfield for the past twenty years and a devoted advocate for animal rights, died unexpectedly on January 27, 2020 while volunteering her time at the cat sanctuary in Danville, NH.
Born in Beverly, MA, daughter of the late James and Virginia (Twomey) Garvey, June graduated from Acton-Boxborough High School with the class of 1972. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology with a minor in Music from the University of New Hampshire.
She was a well-known employee of Dick's Variety on Plum Island many years ago and currently worked as a cashier at the CVS Pharmacy on Pond Street in Newburyport. She was well-known by her many customers for her warmth, engaging personality and easy humor. June most enjoyed working as an Animal Rights Advocate and caretaker of rescue cats. She was a member of the Massachusetts Humane Society, the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society and the MSPCA.
June enjoyed dancing and maintained her lifelong appreciation of music playing flute, piano and guitar. She enjoyed trips to the beach at Biddeford Pool and along the Maine coastline where the Garvey family has vacationed for almost a century. She celebrated family with annual sisters' events to many locations, including Colonial Beach, VA, Port Saint Lucie, FL, Skaneateles, NY, and the Dingle Peninsula, Ireland. The sisters met just 16 days ago for her birthday celebration in York, ME. Last summer she celebrated a family reunion with all of her Garvey relatives, a week-long event that meant so much to her.
June will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her three sisters, Judith G. Lucas and her husband Richard of Scarborough, Maine, Janice V. Garvey of Bethel, Connecticut, Jane G. Hughes and her husband Arthur "Smitty" Hughes of Luray, Virginia, a brother, James B. Garvey and his wife Carol, of Los Angeles, California. She will also be missed by beloved nieces, Laura, Linda and Elizabeth, nephews, Robert, Tucker and Brett, seven great nieces and nephews, and her many colleagues and friends of the feline rescue community.
