IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Judith "Judy"
Betts
January 16, 1958 – April 23, 2020
On Thursday, April 23, 2020, Judith "Judy" Betts, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away at 62, of complications after a 30+ year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Judy was born on January 16, 1958 in Haverhill, MA to Arthur and Arlene Credit. She attended St. Joseph's Grammar School and graduated from Whittier Vocational School as a dietary aid. She worked her way up to head cook at Union Mission Nursing Home, then took a position at Compugraphic, until she accepted an assembly job at Raytheon in North Andover. On April 3, 1976, she married the love of her life, Larry Betts. They had two children, Brian and Amy, whom she loved dearly.
Along with being a devoted wife and mother, Judy enjoyed crafts, gardening and even some amateur bird watching from her home with her kids, but Judy's ultimate passion was cooking. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family. She was right up there with some of her favorites from the culinary world like Mary Ann Esposito and Julia Child. From her pistachio cake, pork chops and applesauce to clam chowder. Judy could do it all. Except for that one Christmas where she burnt the turkey and ended up with Chinese food in its place.
Besides loving to cook, Judy had a particular fondness for four letter words, which really came in handy that one Christmas when she burnt the turkey. Her wit, sense of humor and spunk remained with her throughout her struggles with multiple sclerosis and dementia. She was a fighter and never gave up, no matter how difficult things got.
Judy loved her family deeply. She helped her kids with school projects like creating a life size witch and giant gold castle that almost didn't fit through the door and helped them practice driving for their license, even after leftover pie from Thanksgiving on the dashboard almost caused a pre-licensed driver to jump a curb on the opposite side of the road. She enjoyed being together with her husband and children for long rides to the beach and up the coast, for chop suey sandwiches at Salem Williows, and lazy days at home watching Seinfeld. Judy was also a proud Meme of 4 beautiful grandchildren. They brought so much joy to her life. She lit up when they were around, at least until they started turning the fan or TV on and off.
Some of Judy's best memories include vacationing at Misquamicut Beach, Rhode Island at her Aunt's cottage. There she explored the seaports, relaxed on the beach and stuffed her face with 5 cent lobster knuckles and whipped cream coffee cake along side her husband, parents and family. Another one of Judy's favorite memories came after she had children, on the Betts family's first trip to Disney World. If people did the matching t-shirts thing back then, this would have been the trip to wear them. After scoring an amazing deal package from a public auction, they dined like kings (and hoarded out of this world chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies from their hotel every night), road every ride, and had a blast! It was a trip for the record books. But even just being in her parent's backyard on any given summer day, surrounded by her big extended family, watching her kids play with their cousins and laughing with her siblings until long after dark, was enough.
Judy never realized how beautiful, smart, funny or capable she was. She was her own worst critic. She made the world a better place in so many ways. She was a spiritual person. She believed in God and never lost her faith. Her family takes peace in knowing that she is reunited with her cherished parents and two big brothers. Judy is preceded by her parents, Arthur and Arlene Credit, and brothers George and David Credit.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 44 years, Larry Betts, her children Brian A. Betts and his wife Kim of Hampton NH, Amy A. and her husband Kyle Marsan of Haverhill, brothers Edward and his companion Maureen Turcotte of Haverhill, Larry Credit and wife Margaret of Florida, Thomas and his companion Kathy Burnyshafski of Bradford, sisters Kathleen and her husband Frank Shoemaker of Methuen, Susan and her husband Andy Linehan of Haverhill, grandchildren, Jocelyn S. and Kaelin A. Betts, Maxwell J. and Ella A. Marsan, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Due to the National Health Emergency, private family funeral services will take place under the direction of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH.
