Sandown, NH: Joseph E. Smith, Jr., 64, of Sandown, was pronounced dead at Parkland Medical Center in Derry on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, after being stricken while commuting to work.
Born in Boston on March 30, 1952, son of the late Joseph E. and Geraldine (Finlay) Smith, he was raised and educated in Saugus. A member of the Saugus High School Class of 1970, he also attended the Franklin Institute.
Mr. Smith was beginning a new job as a Parts Department Driver for Betley Chevrolet in Derry and had previously worked at Auto Value Car Parts in Salem, NH.
A member of Saint Anne's Parish of Hampstead, he enjoyed talking on his short wave radio and participating in drag racing at Star Speedway, New England Dragway and several other raceways on the East Coast.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of twenty-four years, Hope (Piper) Smith, a daughter, Megan S. Smith and a son, Adam I. Smith, all of Sandown, a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara A. and Wayne McClintock of Gilford, NH, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul T. Smith and Caroline Ross of Arlington, MA, and Robert J. and Lori Smith of Melrose, MA, his mother-in-law, Betty Piper of Hampstead, NH, an aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Emily A. Smith in 2001.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration to be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral will begin on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Anne's Church, Emerson Avenue, Hampstead.
