Obituary

Atkinson, NH:  John A. McCarthy, 90, a resident of Atkinson since 1969, died peacefully January 17, 2019 at his son's home in Methuen, surrounded by his loving family.

Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, MA, son of the late Frederic and Bertha (Flanagan) McCarthy, he was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1946 and attended the Waltham Watchmaking School.

Mr. McCarthy served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a Private First Class and was a recipient of the Korean Service Medal w/2 Bronze Camp Stars, the UN Service Medal and One Overseas Service Bar. After his discharge from the service, Mr. McCarthy was employed as a watchmaker at Lemay Jewelers in Manchester and later as an Engineering Assistant at Sanders Associates of Nashua until his retirement.

A longtime member of the Conley's Grove Improvement Association, Mr. McCarthy enjoyed repairing watches and clocks, wintering in Tarpon Springs, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada, traveling to Europe and Ireland, and enjoyed twelve cruises with his late wife Roseann.

The loving and devoted husband of the late Roseann (Matterson) McCarthy, to whom he was married for fifty-five years at the time of her death in 2009, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two sons, John A. McCarthy, Jr. and his wife, Donna of Methuen, MA, and Frederic G. McCarthy and his wife, Mary of Sandown, two daughters, Kathleen F. Dallon and her husband, Robert of Lee, NH, and Judy A. McCarthy and her companion, Michael Cuomo of York, Maine, nine grandchildren, Clifford, Lauran, Kay, Meghan, Anthony, John, Patrick, Rachell, and Jessica, three great grandchildren, Lucas, Gwen and Natalie, and several nieces and nephews.  He was pre-deceased by four brothers, Maurice, Frederic, Joseph and William McCarthy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours and Life Celebration to be held on Friday, January 25, 2019, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. A graveside service with Military Honors will take place in the spring at Atkinson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to an animal shelter of the donor's choice.
