Cormier, Sr.
February 23, 1928 – July 9, 2019
Haverhill: John J. Cormier, Sr. 91, a resident of Haverhill since 1998, died peacefully Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, son of the late Clarence and Alice (Holmes) Cormier, he graduated Lynn High School with the Class of 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. A veteran of World War Two, he served honorably aboard the USS Dayton and the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. and was a recipient of the World War Two Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Cormier attended Bentley School of Accounting, graduating in 1954.
He was first employed as an accountant and business manager for several Boston area auto dealerships and later after moving to Shapleigh, Maine in 1974, he owned and operated the Lake Region Market until his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Cormier was a member of All Saints Parish of Haverhill, the American Legion Post of Limerick Maine, and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 8868, Limerick. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was an avid reader and also enjoyed completing puzzles and working on his computer. He was also a fan of old Westerns including the Lone Ranger and anything that starred John Wayne.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Lorna Z. (Jacques) Cormier, three sons, John J. Cormier, Jr and his wife, Kathy of Pinnacle, NC, Michael W. Cormier of Northwood, NH, and Phillip C. Cormier of Winston-Salem, NC, three daughters, Lorna P. Allen and her husband, Paul of North Reading, MA, Audrey H. Clark of Groveland, MA, and Ann M. Lambert of Houston, Texas, two sisters, Barbara Hackett of Peabody, MA, and Mildred Gates and her husband, Edward of Peabody, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Clarence Cormier, sisters, Alice Cashman, and Marion Miller and grandson, Stephen Clark.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mr. Cormier's Life Celebration to be held on Friday evening, July 12, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA. His funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home followed by Military Honors rendered by the U.S. Navy. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
