Haverhill: Joan M. Fettes, 94, of Haverhill and a former longtime resident of Atkinson, NH, died December 5, 2020, two days before her 95 th birthday.
Born in Andover, MA, one of the ten children of the late Charles and Marion (Nicoll) Fettes, she attended local schools and was a member of the Punchard High School Class of 1943. An accomplished and natural athlete, she excelled at basketball as a young woman and was the first female lifeguard at Hussey Pond and Pomp's Pond in Andover.
Ms. Fettes first worked at Marlan Mills and later was employed as an insurance underwriter by the Andover Companies for thirty-nine years until her retirement. She was a member of the Free Christian Church of Andover and the Senior Link Bible study group of the church. An avid and tournament winning golfer, Ms. Fettes was a member of the Andover Country Club where she once sunk a hole-in-one. She also enjoyed swimming and bowling and competed in local and New England tournaments.
She was a resident of Atkinson, NH from 1992 until her recent move to Haverhill and was a former senior representative to the Atkinson Recreation Commission from 2006 until 2014. She was active at the Atkinson Senior Center and with the Atkinson Chapter of Bone Builders at the Atkinson Library. Ms. Fettes enjoyed traveling both coasts of the United States as well as traveling in Europe and Canada and she especially enjoyed trips to Scotland and Bermuda. In her later years, she enjoyed taking day trips, particularly to spend time with her many friends at the beaches of Ogunquit and York, Maine.
Ms. Fettes was predeceased by her two brothers, James and Frank and her seven sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy, Marion, Edith, Muriel, Florence and June. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her longtime friend, Dolores "Del" Dooling, of Atkinson, and many, many nieces, nephews grand nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews, and cousins and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joan's Life Celebration to be held on Friday, December 11, 2020 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH, under the State of New Hampshire Guidelines for social distancing and the wearing of masks. Her funeral service will take place on Friday at 12 Noon at the Free Christian Church of Andover, 31 Elm Street, Andover, MA, followed by burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover using the same guides.
