Obituary

Haverhill: James J. Rau, 77, a longtime resident of Haverhill, died October 6, 2020 at Penacook Place in Haverhill.

Born in Lawrence, son of the late James and Dorothy (Morris) Rau, he was raised and educated in Methuen, and attended Tenney Memorial High School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1960 until 1968 with the rank of Specialist 4. He later served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard until 1978.

Mr. Rau was employed in the construction field for many years, first at Early Construction for twelve years and later at Mirra Construction until his retirement.  Following his retirement, he worked for the Highway Department of the City of Haverhill.

He was accomplished at drawing and also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson in his younger years, target practice at Bob's Tactical and bowling as a member of leagues at Pilgrim Lanes in Haverhill. An avid Red Sox fan, he was also a longtime volunteer for Haverhill's Brightside project.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by three sons, John J. Rau of Derry, NH, Christopher M. Rau and his wife Suzanne of West Newbury and James M. Rau and his wife Tracy of Salem, NH, his former wife Christine (Cosio) Rau of Newburyport, sisters, Dorothy Bonanno and her husband William of Methuen, Linda Kurek of Methuen, Nancy Heenan and her husband Rick of Gorham, ME, Marylou Richardson and her husband Jim of South Carolina, a sister-in-law Camille Hitchmoth, five grandchildren, Jack Rau, Hunter Rau, Haydin Rau, Kylie Rau and Meagan Rau, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother William Hitchmoth and a sister Carol Schultz.

The family would like to thank the staff of Penacook Place for the kindness and compassionate care extended to Jim during his illness.

A private family graveside service is being held under the direction of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH . In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.
