Obituary

Sandown, NH: On Saturday June 1, 2019, James "Jim" Devine, forty-year resident of Sandown, NH passed away at the age of 69.

Jim was born on September 6, 1949 in Lawrence, MA to Christopher Devine and Emma (Duggan) Devine.  Jim was a varsity basketball and football player at Tenney High School in Methuen, MA and pursued secondary education at Merrimack College.  On May 20, 1973 he married Maureen Quinlan.  They raised three children, Matthew, Erin and Patrick.

In 1973 Jim started H.O.P. Sales & Service, an industrial cleaning equipment business, in partnership with his wife Maureen.  Jim's strategic mind, unwavering work ethic and steadfast attitude led the business to thrive. His sons joined the business twenty years ago and together the family brought the business to where it is today; ranked by Business New Hampshire Magazine as a Top Family-Owned Business and recognized nationally as a leading distributor of industrial cleaning equipment.

Jim excelled in the areas of design, building, mechanics and fabrication.  He had an innate ability to conceptualize ideas and execute his visions, all while being self-taught.

In the 1990s Jim joined the 1 st New Hampshire Volunteer Cavalry, later earning rank as Captain.  Jim's Cavalry unit traveled as far as Gettysburg, PA to reenact Civil War battles on horseback.  In 1999 Governor Jeanne Shaheen directed that the 1 st New Hampshire Volunteer Cavalry operate as a ceremonial unit of the New Hampshire National Guard to be known as the Governor's Horse Guard.  In early 2000, Jim and the 1 st New Hampshire Volunteer Cavalry were sworn in.

Jim also had a passion for motorcycles.  He raced motocross competitively in his twenties and continued riding through his last day.

Among many other memorable attributes, Jim will be remembered for his quick wit, strong will and the love he had for his grandchildren.
