James E. Burtner, age 85 of Hampstead, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at his home, following a long illness. He was born on September 19, 1928 in Lynn, MA the son of the late Evers and Mary Ellen (Dubois) Burtner. He was raised and educated in Lynn and Wakefield, MA. James was a graduate of both Northeastern University and Bentley College. Mr. Burtner worked at Western Electric Co. and also for Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Concord, NH, where he retired following 26 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1948 - 1952 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged. He was a former Deacon and Treasurer of the Hampstead Congregational Church, where he was a member for many years. Mr. Burtner enjoyed motorcycling and operating his steam launch on inland waters. He also walked for exercise and enjoyed nature walks in rural settings.
Mr. Burtner was predeceased by his wife, Virginia A. (Cole) Burtner. He is survived by his son, David S. Burtner of Salem, NH, his daughter, Nancy J. Areano and her husband, Paul of Westborough, MA and his grandchildren, Joseph P. Areano and Leah M. Areano. His sister, Cynthia Knutson of CA, 4 nieces and his dear friends, Jan and Toby Merikanto of Sarasota, FL also survive him.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Hampstead Congregational Church, 61 Main Street, Hampstead, NH 03841. In-lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Burtner's memory are requested to the Hampstead Congregational Church at the address listed above. Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street (Rt. 121A), Plaistow, NH 03865 is entrusted with the arrangements.
