Obituary

Haverhill: Isabelle M. Comeau, 85, of Haverhill and a well-known country singer and entertainer , known professionally as Bella Lee, died October 9, 2018 at Holy Family Medical Center at Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, daughter of the late J. Alphie and Elizabeth (Dugas) Comeau, she attended Saint Joseph Grammar School and was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1952.

An entertainer and vocalist at an early age, she had her own Saturday morning radio show on WHAV from 1951 until 1953 and later on WCCM from 1954 until 1956. She began a musical relationship in 1955 with Johnny White, performing harmony and yodeling and the following year performed in Nashville on the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree. She later performed with Garland Abbott and the Tidewater Playboys in local clubs and on television over WTAR in Norfolk, VA. In 1965 she performed in the Grand Ole Opry Show in the Boston Arena with Ray Price and the great Buck Owens. She continued her career along the East Coast, the Southern United States and Canada and returned to Massachusetts and performed regularly at the French-American Victory Club in Waltham from 1969 until 1977 with the John Penny Band. During visits to Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, she performed at local venues, on Maritime Television and at the Canadian National Fiddlers Championships.

She retired from entertaining in 1978 and was later inducted into the Massachusetts Country Music Hall of Fame on September 24, 1990.

After moving back to the Haverhill area, Miss Comeau was employed at Haverhill Industries and for twenty-five years in the Housekeeping Department of Hannah Duston Healthcare Center.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two brothers, David A. Comeau of Ipswich, and J. Thomas Comeau and his wife, Jacquelyn of Haverhill, a nephew, Alan D. Comeau and his companion, Jean Finocchario of Seabrook, NH and nieces, Susan (Comeau) Morin and her husband, David of Ipswich, Lisa (Comeau) Sanborn and her husband, Edward of Dunedin, FL, Lori Comeau of Haverhill and Julie (Comeau) Leathers of Haverhill and several great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to Isabelle's Life Celebration to be held on Sunday, October 14, 2018, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. Her funeral service will be held on Monday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. with burial to follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill.
