Obituary

Hugh William Rooney, 58, of Plaistow, NH passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Monica (Colby) Rooney with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.

He was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on April 11, 1965 and was the son of Margaret (Mackie) Rooney and the late James Rooney.

He grew up in Windsor, CT where he attended public schools before going to Dean Junior College. He went to Bentley University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Management.  After college he worked as a stockbroker before starting a career selling health insurance.  He worked for many major carriers including Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and finally Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

He was a car enthusiast and had a passion for anything with a motor in it.  He enjoyed collecting classic cars, iconic snowmobiles and all things motorsports. Some of his favorite activities included attending car shows, snowmobile races, especially when his sons were competing and watching his daughter's sporting events. He was very proud of his children and always supported them in all their endeavors.

He grew up spending time on Cape Cod and as a young man enjoyed living and working there in the summer months. Hugh especially loved spending time at his home on Porter Lake in Maine. Winter was his favorite time of year, he was an avid snowmobiler sharing a love for snow with his wife, Monica. They would celebrate every snow storm with champagne a tradition that started at Bentley, where they met. Skiing at Saddleback Mountain with his family always put a smile on his face and lacing up his skates on Haley Pond brought him back to his high school hockey playing days. In summer he could be found behind the wheel of his boat towing his family and friends around so they could enjoy various water sports. He loved jet skiing, wake boarding, water skiing and knee boarding.

He was grateful for the care he received at the Mass General Cancer Center.  All the doctors and nurses were so wonderful at the Termeer Center and made him feel like he was the only patient they were treating. He was so strong throughout this battle, he fought hard and never gave up. He remained positive and was a pillar of strength for his family. It was important to him to pay it forward by participating in clinical drug trials which he hoped would help him but also help those who came after him. He left a great legacy of kindness, generosity, respect, strength, courage and his greatest gift and what was most important to him, his family who loved him so much. Hugh was a true inspiration to all who knew him.

Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by his children Blake Rooney, Brooke Rooney and Spencer Rooney all of Plaistow, and his sister Christine Rooney and husband Russell Isch of Connecticut as well as many nieces and nephews.  He also loved his cats Malibu and Porter who provided him great comfort.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, February 8, 2024 from 4pm – 7pm at the Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home 116 Main Street, Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will be held on Friday at 11am at Atkinson Congregational Church, 101 Main Street, Atkinson, NH. Interment will be held privately.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating blood or a donation to the American Cancer Society.
