December 10, 1932 – November 15, 2017
Eugene Harrison Vater, 84, son of the late John Vater and Alice (Langmeade) Vater of Newfoundland, passed away at High Pointe Hospice surrounded by his family on November 15, 2017. Born December 10, 1932, Eugene was born in Boston, MA., and a resident of Newton, New Hampshire.
Eugene attended Saugus High School, and became a dedicated machinist, working for General Electric, and retiring after an outstanding 28 years of dedicated service working on turbines, and jet propulsion engines. A proud Marine, Eugene honorably served in the Korean War, and later maintained an active membership with the American Legion. An incredibly gifted man, Eugene was a man with many hobbies such as fishing, model shipbuilding, and crafted numerous and highly detailed puzzles. A terrific flower gardener, Eugene's talent stood out as the best in the neighborhood! An avid golfer, bowler, and horseshoe champion, he also gave of his time coaching youth hockey in the Pentucket school system.
Eugene will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary (Morrison) Vater, who can recall in detail, their many wonderful years together. He is survived by his 3 sons Scott Vater, and his girlfriend Drina of Plaistow, NH., Barry Vater and his wife Renae, of Barrington, NH., Gregg Vater, and wife Karen of Atkinson, NH., and 1 daughter Susan (Vater) Heck and her husband Raimund of Groveland, MA. Eugene leaves 2 brothers, Kermit Vater and his wife Patricia of Sanford, ME., Robert Vater and his wife Dorothy of Saugus, MA., Eugene was predeceased by a third brother John Vater of Saugus, MA. He is survived by his sister Beverly (Vater) Badger and her husband Daniel of Bradenton, FL. Eugene leaves a long and lasting legacy of 10 loving grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend Eugene's calling hours on Sunday, November 19, 2017 from 4pm to 8pm, under the direction of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home , 116 Main Street, Plaistow, NH., with a funeral service on Monday, November 20, 2017 in the funeral home at 10am, with a burial to follow the service, at Riverview Cemetery in Groveland, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Eugene Vater.
