Obituary

Elena L. (Mammone) Sapienti, 92, passed away on September 26, 2020 at her home in Salem, NH. She was much beloved by her family and dedicated her life to caring for them. Ellie was widowed in 1996 following the passing of her best friend and husband of forty-nine years, John Sapienti. She was the devoted mother of Joan Andrews and her husband Walter of Salem; and Michael Sapienti, also of Salem, the loving grandmother of Mike Andrews and his wife Kim (Hanoian) of Needham, MA; Chris Andrews and his wife Laura (Munier) of Framingham, MA; Stephen Sapienti and his fiancé Lynn Herman of Andover, MA; Samantha Sapienti of Andover; and Jonathan Sapienti of Salem, great grandmother of Eva and Aaron Andrews of Needham. She was also the caring sister of Sil Mammone of Los Olivos, CA, Margie Slavin of Glendale, CA and the late Phyllis Pomo, Albert Mammone and Violet Cortese, and the loving aunt to ten nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Haverhill, MA, Ellie was the fifth of six children born to her parents Bartolo Mammone and Lucia DiPucchio Mammone, both from Sora, Italy. She graduated Haverhill High School in 1946. Her parents and siblings moved to California in the summer of 1947  less than two weeks after her wedding. While Ellie and John tried moving to California later that year, they chose to return to Massachusetts because they liked the seasons in New England and felt that Christmas didn't feel the same on the West Coast.

Ellie worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses in the '50s and '60s, and from 1980 to 1988 she chipped in by working part time at a maternity store founded by Joan and Michael called Love-N-Bloom. Her work always took a backseat to caring for her family, including helping raise her grandchildren in the '70s, '80s, and '90s. In 1994, Ellie and John moved from Haverhill to Salem to be closer to family.

She loved cooking and baking. Some of her family's favorites included her gnocchis and sauce, spinach pie, chicken piccata, and apple pie. She also loved skiing, listening to talk radio, sending handwritten notes to her family and friends, spinning slot machines at the casinos in Connecticut, and doing whatever she could do to put a smile on the faces of her family members. She will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, October 4, 2020 from 1:00 to 3:30 pm, observing the guidelines for social distancing and the wearing of masks at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA.
