Obituary

Peabody, MA: Elaine M. (Gardella) Insero, 90, of Brooksby Village in Peabody,  formerly of Fermanagh St, in the Bradford section of Haverhill, and a nationally recognized multi-media artist, died peacefully, on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at her home.

Born and raised in Haverhill, daughter of the late Andrew and Sabina (Taglieri) Gardella, she attended local schools and graduated from Haverhill High School and attended Northern Essex Community College. Mrs. Insero began her working career as a hairdresser and owned and operated Elaine's Beauty Shoppe in Bradford Square from 1955 until 1984.

Mrs. Insero received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fine Art, With Honors, from Montserrat School of Art in 1988. She embarked upon a new career as an artist working in mixed media, monoprints, pastels, and sculpturing. Much of her work was abstract in design and she was also known for her portraits and collages with a process called "layering". Her work was featured in galleries in Hilton Head, SC, California, Massachusetts, Italy, and in several locations across New England. Her artwork was the subject of numerous newspaper articles across the Merrimack Valley and the United States as well as art publications and periodicals, especially articles written by the National Society of Layerists, The Arts Institute Newsletter and the Magazine of the Arts North of Boston. Her work also appeared in the hardcover books "Bridging Time and Space: Essays on Layered Art" and also "The Art of Layering: Making Connections".

A resident of Bradford, for most of her life until moving to Peabody in 2017, Mrs. Insero was a a former member of Sacred Hearts Parish. She was also a member of the National Society of Layerists, The Greater Haverhill Art Association, the Newburyport Art Association, The Society of Layerists in Multi Media, and The Monotype Guild of New England.

In addition to her busy schedule, Mrs. Insero passed on her expertise and love of art to private art students and supported a foster child in her home. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, bowling as a member of a league at Academy Lanes and also joined the local musical group, The Italian Serenaders. In 1989, she combined her love of art and traveling abroad by attending a five week summer session at Il Colleggio Del Mundo, Duino, Italy and in 2006, she traveled to San Gimignano, Tuscany, to study Sculpture and Art History with sculptor Mark DiPiazza.

She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of sixty-eight years, Frank Insero, who cared for her tirelessly throughout her entire illness, enabling her to remain in her home until the time of her passing.

She is also survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen A. and Joseph Musto of Londonderry,NH, Monica J. and James Buckley of Seabrook Beach, NH, Laurie J. Kenney of Haverhill, and Carol A. and Matt Gaucher of North Chatham, MA, a son, Stephen A. Insero of Hampton, NH; twelve grandchildren, Marty LaFlamme, Jennifer Kuhn, Jimmy Buckley, Andrew Buckley, Shawn Kenney, Eric Kenney, Aaron Kenney, Zachary Gaucher, Meghan Gaucher, Emily Gaucher, Benjamin Insero and Michael Insero; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Gardella.

Calling hours will be private. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service to be held on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 1 p.m. on the grounds of Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. Masks will be required for those not vaccinated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd.
