Hampstead, NH: Edward G. Martin, 77, a resident of Hampstead for the last seventeen years, died peacefully on Monday evening, June 28, 2021 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, with his loved ones by his side.
Born and raised in Haverhill, Massachusetts, son of the late John and Anna (Stravinsky) Martin, he was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1961 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Salem State College in 1965.
A Vietnam War veteran, Ed served courageously and honorably in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant and radioman from 1968 until 1970 and was a recipient of The Bronze Star Medal for "meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces in Vietnam from January to December of 1969". He was also a recipient of the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Sharpshooter badge and two Overseas Bars.
After his discharge from the service, Ed began his teaching career that spanned forty years as a Sixth Grade Social Studies and English teacher at the Helen R. Donaghue Elementary School in Merrimac, MA. He was a well-respected mentor and teacher, using his great sense of humor and love of history and language to relate to his students and his friends.
A devoted husband and father, Ed was a member of Saint Anne's Parish of Hampstead. He was an avid fly-fisherman and hiker, and true lover of nature. He also enjoyed reading, especially mystery novels and non-fiction as well as playing pool, traveling, and following New England sports teams. After retiring from teaching, Ed delighted in being a full-time father to his twin sons, volunteering his time to support his sons' activities in the local Boy Scouting program as well as their other endeavors.
Predeceased in 2015 by his son Robert C. Martin, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Elizabeth "Lisa" (Belden) Martin, his son, John L. Martin of Hampstead, two nephews, Brian Martin of Haverhill, and David martin of Groveland, and a niece, Dawn Ryan of Haverhill and several great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by his brothers Robert Martin and Donald Martin.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours to be held on Friday morning, July 2, 2021 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH and followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at Twelve O'clock Noon in Saint Anne's Church, Emerson Avenue, Hampstead. His service will conclude with burial in Lakeview Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the U.S. Army. Donations in his name may be made to The American Heart Association.
