NEWTON, NH—D. Wayne Banks of Newton, NH passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2021. Wayne was surrounded by family and friends during his last days.
Wayne was a loving husband and father, a devoted brother, and a beloved friend. Having lived in the north shore area of Massachusetts for more than 50 years of his life, Wayne had many lifelong friends and business associates. He was born in Topsfield on April 25, 1944 to the late Harold Banks and the late Dorothea Banks. The middle child with two sisters, Wayne graduated from Masconomet High School, class of '62, and Northern Essex Community College.
After serving in the National Guard, Wayne set to work pursuing his dream of becoming a successful salesman. Wayne's honest and easy going manner helped him build strong, long-lasting relationships in business and in life. His work ethic and tenacity drove him quickly up the ranks of several private mortgage insurance companies, an industry that was in its infancy at the time. He started at Investors Mortgage Insurance, eventually becoming a Senior Vice President. He also worked at United Guarantee Insurance and several other PMI companies before switching to the title insurance industry in the 1990's. Wayne first joined Lawyers Title Insurance Company, and then went to Old Republic Title Insurance, where he was manager of Banking Relations for the company. When he left Old Republic Wayne worked with investors to start up a title company in NH and FL, becoming President of the company. Wayne was active for many years in the Mass. Mortgage Bankers Association (MMBA), and several other professional organizations.
When he wasn't working on his career, Wayne enjoyed playing basketball in the famous Hamilton (MA) Senior Men's League, golfing, skiing, and entertaining friends. He also spent many happy days at his summer residence on Lake Winnipesaukee, waterskiing and relaxing with friends and family on Little Bear Island. Wayne was an avid golfer for more than 50 years. He was a member of Andover Country Club before moving to NH. He joined Atkinson Country Club, where he competed in many golf tournaments. He proudly displayed his trophy for winning 2 nd Place in the Member-Member Golf Tournament at Atkinson CC in 2013.
In retirement, Wayne spent 6 years serving on the Board of Directors at the Sargent Woods Association. He traveled with his wife Anne to Europe, Canada, and throughout the U.S., and enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a fun-loving, honest and generous man who was devoted to his family and friends. Wayne made the most of his 77 years, leaving behind a legacy of business success, community leadership, and family love.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anne, of Newton, NH; his two children, Gregory Banks and wife Zan Barry of Roslindale, MA; and daughter Jennifer Smith and her husband Mikel Smith of Newport, OR; four beloved grandchildren, Sophie and Juna Banks, and Orion and Dorothy Smith.
