Obituary

Cynthia E. (Hogg) Nighelli, 70, a resident of Derry, NH, died peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025 surrounded by her loving family after undergoing treatment for cholangiocarcinoma for over three years.

She was born in Springfield, Ohio on August 2, 1954 and was the daughter of the late Charles and Marjorie (Morrison) Hogg. Cynthia was raised in Wakefield, MA, spent her early adult life in the greater Boston area and then moved to southern NH with her husband to start a family. She graduated from Wakefield High School, Class of 1972 and then Malden Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1975. Although very proud to be a "diploma nurse", later in life she furthered her education at the University of New Hampshire where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1998 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 2000. As a bedside nurse, Cynthia worked for many years in perianesthesia and critical care. As a nurse practitioner, she specialized in primary care and was very proud of being able to serve veterans working for The Department of Veterans Affairs at the VA Hospital in Bedford, MA from which she ultimately retired after many years. She also very much enjoyed her "retirement job" as a nurse practitioner at CVS walk-in clinics in southern NH. Over the years as a nurse practitioner, Cynthia precepted many students as she loved to teach and valued being able to mentor future nurse practitioners.

Cynthia loved animals, most especially dogs. She leaves behind her beloved dog Denver who she adopted only one month prior to her diagnosis. She was so grateful to have such a loyal companion to bring her joy and purpose for over three years. She was an avid football fan, gardener, and recycler. She felt it was very important to improve the environment, not for herself but for future generations, with her recycling efforts. She always loved gardening, but in recent years focused her gardening efforts on supporting native plants and pollinators. Cynthia's close friends also brought her great joy and she enjoyed spending time and making memories with them whether it was coffee dates over the phone, lunch with "the girls", concerts, or trips to places like Arizona and Antigua.

Cynthia will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Richard Nighelli, her daughter Melissa MacArthur and her husband Kevin of Manchester, NH, her two grand-dogs, her siblings Gladys France, Harvey Hogg and his wife Lynn, Philip Hogg and his wife Jerice, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three cousins Nancy Miller, Connie Collins, and Carol Chapman who she considered more like sisters and who provided her with an immeasurable amount of support, comfort, and laughs over recent months for which she was beyond grateful. She was predeceased by her siblings Walter Hogg and Bradford Hogg.

Cynthia's family would like to express sincere gratitude to the team at Dana Farber who provided her with expert, comprehensive, and compassionate care for over three years. In addition, they would like to thank the staff that cared for her at Elliot Hospital and at Granite VNA Hospice House for also providing excellent care which ensured her final days were comfortable and dignified.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, March 21 from 4pm - 6:45pm at the Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home 116 Main Street, Plaistow. A funeral service will follow at 7pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be held privately.
