Obituary

Charles Edgar Legare, 76, passed away unexpectedly on April 17, 2026, at his home in Largo, Florida.

Born in Key West, Florida on August 10, 1949, he was one of a set of twins born to Violet Alida (Edwards) and Armand Francois Felix Legare. Born prematurely, Charles’ twin lived only a few days. Charles was the eldest son in a family of a total of nine children. Following his mother’s death when he was aged ten, paternal relatives welcomed the children in their homes and Charles lived with his father’s brother’s family in Salem, NH. The family eventually reunited in Newcastle, NH in about 1963.

Charles graduated from Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, NH and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. He worked for twelve years as a meat and poultry inspector for the USDA in Colorado and New Hampshire, He worked on a NH dairy farm milking cows, he helped his father put in swimming pools and installing smoke and fire detectors, he spent eleven years as a caretaker of a special needs camp in Wolfeboro, NH, and worked with special needs children and adults, he later delivered cars across New England for a dealership until his retirement in 2014.

In his younger years, Charles was very physically active. Playing tennis, football, hockey, jumping out of airplanes, rock climbing, fly fishing and wilderness hiking in Colorado. Charles could water ski, cross-country ski, he was a sailboarder and he loved sailing. A favorite activity was taking his two beloved sons, Jonathan and Christian, on camping trips.

In 2024, Charles and his wife moved to Largo, FL for a better quality of life free of cold, ice and snow. There he played shuffleboard, went bowling, played Euchre, rode a trike and was teaching himself the guitar. In the Pointe West community, he found a network of support and companionship.

Charles is survived by his wife of twenty years, Joanne P Legare, sons Jonathan (Brittany) Legare and Christian Legare of New Hampshire, granddaughter Angelina Legare of New Hampshire; siblings Joanne E Legare of Naples, FL, Armandine Legare of San Francisco, CA, Marie Hanneman of Dayton, MT, Felix (Helen) Legare of Machias, ME, Michael (Jacque) Legare of Largo, FL, James (Tony) Legare of Houston, TX, Sherry Legare of Chicago, IL, Gina (Angel) Oldjiewski of Riverview, FL; step-children Abigail (Matthew) Batchelder and their children Samantha and Madison Batchelder, and Timothy (Julia) Losee. There are cousins too numerous to mention here and many nieces and nephews.

Charles will be remembered at a Catholic Mass at All Saints Church at 10:00am on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01832, which will be live streamed on the parish’s website, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Berube-Comeau Funeral Home at 47 Broadway, Haverhill, MA 01832. There are no calling hours.
