Bill Howes of Danville, New Hampshire, passed away unexpectedly at home on February 20, 2025. Bill leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Diane.
Diane and Bill met at Concord Carlisle High School as students with the theatre stage crew. Diane mentioned; "We dated for 2 years in high school and college, then after 14 'lost years' Bill found me and then we got married. We always referred to those as 'the lost years."
Bill earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Northeastern University. Bill was a hands-on, skilled craftsman, and had a love for classic automobiles. When Bill was 11 years old, his dad gave him an old VW with a frozen motor. Bill disassembled the motor, repaired it to working condition, and acquired driving skills. This initiated his enduring passion for restoring automobiles. Bill was active in the stage crew building sets in high school and spent the following years in college assisting community theatres with stage props and structures. He also rebuilt a historic 1700s schoolhouse in Westford, Massachusetts, a 1770s farmhouse in Danville, New Hampshire, and a small house in North Windham, Maine.
On his property in New Hampshire, Bill completed home improvements including building a timber frame barn from scratch, including meticulous attention to minimal hand-hewn clearances, with pride for the work he accomplished. The barn served Howes Farm well. Bill and Diane had llamas for 25 years, and both enjoyed them immensely.
Bill grew up in Carlisle, Mass., where home projects were always ongoing. He enjoyed sailing, camping, fishing, and scouting. Bill carried the ideals of scouting through his daily life and kept true to his course. Bill maintained communication with his acquaintances from Carlisle and had a core group of friends with whom he enjoyed attending car exhibitions and exchange meets. Generous with his time he was well known for helping his friends.
He loved his family and always had a dog to pet along the way. Bill was reserved but had a keen sense of humor and timing that were appreciated by everyone.
Besides his loving wife, Diane, Bill is survived by his father, E. David Howes, Jr. Sandwich, MA and his spouse Doris. Also, his brother Peter and his wife Robin, of Pacifica, California.
There will be a celebration of Bill's life in the months to come.
Donations in memory of Bill can be made to the Newbury School of Weaving in Newbury, Vermont.
