Haverhill, MA: Bertrand J. "Bert" Berube, 92, of Haverhill, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
Born in Lawrence, son of the late Donat and Yvonne (Morel) Berube, he was a member of the first graduating class of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence. He went on to attend Marist Seminary. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as a medic and pharmacist mate and was a recipient of the American Area Medal, the European-African Medal with four stars, the WWII Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Following his honorable discharge he worked in the local shoe industry. He later worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a Tax Examiner for seventeen years. After his retirement from the I.R.S., Mr. Berube was a member of the staff of Berube-Comeau Funeral Home in Haverhill from 1984-2001. He also worked for Berube Insurance and Accounting from 1984-2004 before fully retiring.
A member of All Saints Parish and the former St. Joseph's Parish, he was also a member of the Holy Name Society and a former member of the Parish Council. Mr. Berube was a member of the AmVets #147 and the Elks Club of Haverhill. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Bowling League and the I.R.S Golf League. Mr. Berube was an umpire for St. Joseph's Little League for many years and coached for the American Legion Baseball Team. He enjoyed playing cards and horseshoes and taking trips to Foxwoods. He also enjoyed spending summers with his family at Province Lake.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Irene H. (Goyette) Berube, and is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth B. and Margaret Berube of Auburn, NH, his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Carl D. "Dan" Fredrickson of Atkinson, NH, five grandchildren, Alan Berube and his wife Cristina of Washington, DC, Carla Berube of Medford, MA, Kristen (Fredrickson) Walker and her husband Thomas of Manchester, NH, Jessica (Fredrickson) Monroe and her husband Marl of Auburn, NH, and Steven Fredrickson of Newton, NH, and five great grandchildren, Erica Berube, Oliver Monroe, Violet Monroe, Parker Berube, and Jackson Walker.
Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. His funeral will begin on Monday, January 27, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Haverhill.
