Plaistow: Barbara M. (Ordway) Carifio, 90, a former longtime resident of Plaistow, died Monday, November 12, 2018 at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center.
Born in Manchester, NH, daughter of the late Clarence and Madeliene (Cate) Ordway, she moved to Plaistow as a child, where she was raised and educated. She attended The Pollard School and was a member of the Sanborn Seminary Class of 1947. As a young woman, she enjoyed skating and was an accomplished tap-dancer.
While living briefly on the West Coast, Mrs. Carifio was employed for four years by Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. After returning to the area and settling in Haverhill and Bradford, she worked for twenty-five years for New England Telephone & Telegraph, and later for fifteen years as receptionist for Attorney Marsha Kazarosian.
A resident of Plaistow for twenty-four years, Mrs. Carifio was a devoted and active member of The First Baptist Church of Plaistow where she served on several church committees and was a member of the Triangle Guild, the Ladies Social Circle, the Pythian Sisters and the Bible study group. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Women's City Club of Haverhill, and the Plaistow Historical Society.
Mrs. Carifio enjoyed cooking and was well known for a variety of her baked cookies. She also enjoyed summer vacationing and day trips to the beach, completing crossword puzzles and volunteering in the Read Aloud program at the Pollard School. She enjoyed her daily walks and was devoted to the neighborhood pets that she met and fed along her way.
The wife of Edward N. Carifio, who predeceased her in 2011, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward N. and Nora Carifio of Stuart, FL, and Alan D. and Phyllis Carifio of Plaistow, a daughter and son-in-law, Jyme C. and Robert Marcotte of Plaistow, a grandson, Jonathan Carifio of Boston, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Judy Ordway and Ernie and Linda Carpenter , all of Plaistow, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hope and George Murray of Atkinson and Brenda and John Galloway of Plaistow, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Nicholas R. Marcotte and a brother Ronald Ordway.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mrs. Carifio's Life Celebration to be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home 116 Main St., Route 121 A, Plaistow. Her funeral service wil be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Plaistow, 122 Main ST, followed by burial in Maplewood Cemetery.
