Obituary

Arthur William Wiggin, 84, a 54-year resident of Plaistow passed away on January 27, 2025 after a period of declining health.

He was born on March 30, 1940 in Exeter, NH to Arthur Dean and Glenna (Eaton) Wiggin.  Arthur was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1958. He joined the United States Navy and served with the First Marines at Camp Lejeune and eventually served aboard the USS WASP as a Medic.

In 1966, he married Anne Willson of Kingston, NH with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Also in 1966, Arthur joined the Exeter Police Department and was appointed to the New Hampshire State Police in January 1969 serving out of TROOP A in Exeter.   He was promoted to Detective Sergeant and then to Lieutenant and retired as Commander of the Major Crimes Unit after 32 years of distinguished service. In 1978, Arthur attended the 12-week Baxter School of Polygraph in New York City, and graduated as a Certified Polygraph Examiner.

In 1971, Arthur and Anne moved to Sweet Hill Road in Plaistow where the state trooper car was always prominently displayed in the front yard or in the driveway. He was and remains a legend in the law enforcement field. As a member of the NH State Police, he worked security details for Presidents Gerald Ford, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and once even drove John Wayne to the airport.  "A force to be reckoned with" is how one person spoke of Arthur's career.

In 1980, Arthur graduated from St. Anselm's College with an associate degree in Criminal Justice and from Franklin Pierce University with Bachelor of Arts degree.  After retirement Arthur went back to work as an Investigator for the Rockingham County Attorney's office for 15 years.

He was a fifty-year Mason of the Star in the East Lodge F&AM in Exeter, a member of Gideon Lodge F&AM in Kingston and he was a former Bektash Shriner. Arthur spent many years camping throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont with his brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Judy Mills of Fryeburg, Maine. He also enjoyed many trips to Canada and Nova Scotia. Arthur loved going to lunch at Petey's in Rye with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jeff and Jane Willson of Kingston.   He especially loved spending time at the Danforth Bay Campground in Freedom with his daughter and granddaughter.  He was a true friend to many and will be missed by the Sweet Hill gang.

Besides his wife, Anne, with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage in April, he is survived by his loving daughter Jennifer Lovett and her husband Jerry of Plaistow and his granddaughter Victoria Skye McLeod of Derry, his sister-in-law Marsha Slayton and her partner Jim Clark of Hingham, MA as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sisters Jane Robillard and Dorothy Ray. Arthur / "Uncle Bill" was loved by his extended family as being "the nicest man" and "a great guy". Born with a strong moral compass, he never failed to stand up for what was right.

Services with military honors will be held at the family's convenience at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veteran's charity of one's choice, the Plaistow Fire Department or to the NHSPCA.

The family would especially like to thank the Plaistow Fire Department for their professionalism, courtesy and compassion over the last several months.
