Atkinson, NH: Alfred A. Christopher, 96, a resident of Atkinson since 1958 and a former resident of Haverhill, died February 23, 2017 at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill.
Born, raised and educated in Haverhill, son of the late Charles and Gilda (Minalio) Christopher, he attended Haverhill Public Schools and was a member of the Haverhill High School Class of 1939.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War Two, Mr. Christopher served honorably and with distinction as a Private First Class and member of the 3rd Battalion, 502 nd Parachute Infantry of the 101 st Airborne Division and saw action in the historic Battle of the Bulge and Battle of Market Garden. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star for "Meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy", the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, the W.W.II Victory Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon.
Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Christopher was employed as a mechanic for several years at Marble Motors of Haverhill and later was employed at General Electric Co.as an instructor in the Apprentice Department until his retirement.
A member of Saint Luke the Evangelist Parish and the former Holy Angels Parish of Plaistow, Mr. Christopher was an avid Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. His family was the most important part of his life and he enjoyed maintenance projects around his home in Atkinson as well as being counted on to fix any problems that arose at his children's and sibling's homes. Mr. Christopher spent several winters at his home in Northport, Florida and maintained a lifelong interest in cars and motorcycles and enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Jane.
He is survived by his loving wife of seventy years, Jane (Ingham) Christopher, a daughter Jean M. Blackadar, of Atkinson, two grandsons, James C. Blackadar and Scott M. Blackadar, both of Atkinson, four great-grandchildren, Seth, Troy, Molly and Matthew Blackadar, two sisters, Mary Wyka and Louise Klodenski, both of Groveland, MA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Eugene Christopher and a sister Rita Guilfoyle.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mr. Christopher's Life Celebration to be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 1, at 10a. m. in the funeral home followed by burial with military honors in Saint Patrick Cemetery, Haverhill, MA.
